Venice Masked Carnival
In chilly February, the city cheers itself with a reminder that spring is also on the way. Naturally, it does this by donning glittering masks and tricon hats, playing a medieval version of football in period costumes and filling the canals with decorated gondolas.

Carnevale dates back to the 13th century but it peaked in the 18th century - when the masks were supposed to encourage equality, but really allowed the decadent aristocrats to reach even greater heights of depravity.

Today, the pricey Grand Masked Ball is a reminder of the days when the nobility danced the quadrille, but the labyrinth streets and canals are heaving with all sorts of free fun.
